Suicide is a workplace safety issue that demands the attention of everyone in our industry. The same as putting on hard hats and work boots, checking in with our mates should be just as routine.

The statistics are tough:

  • The construction industry loses nearly one person every week to suicide.
  • Construction workers are nine times more likely to die by suicide than a workplace accident.
  • There were more suicides by men in the construction industry, but women attempt more often.
  • Young construction workers are at even higher risk.

Mates in Construction NZ engages with workers through on-site training and provides those identified as at risk with case management support that connects them to suitable professional support.
