Connecting physical activity and mental wellbeing

The British Mental Health Foundation published "Let’s Get Physical", a report on the impact of physical activity on mental wellbeing in May 2013.

The report was published to coincide with British Mental Health Awareness Week 2013 which highlighted the impact physical activity and exercise have on mental health and wellbeing.

This report provides an overview of current research into the impact of physical activity on mental health. It looks as a range of components of mental health including mood, stress, self-esteem and anxiety; as well as considering some specific mental health conditions. Illustrated with real-life case studies, the report also provides practical suggestions for increasing physical activity levels.

Key findings of the Let's Get Physical Report
  • People with high levels of regular physical activity have been shown to have higher levels of positive emotions compared to people with moderate and low levels of physical activity.
  • Studies have shown that participants report feeling more awake and calmer directly after being physically active compared to periods on inactivity.
  • Highly active individuals have been shown to have lower stress rates compared to low active individuals.
  • Studies have shown that people who participate on physical activity typically have greater physical and overall self-esteem.
  • Meeting the recommended public health guidelines for physical activity seems to offer greater benefits to those suffering with depression than lower levels of physical activity.
  • Physical activity during the lifespan seems to have a positive effect on cognition and a protective effect against developing dementia.
  • Studies have shown that interventions for people with severe mental illness found physical activity can contribute to improved quality of life through social interaction, meaningful use of time, purposeful activity and empowerment.
  • Physical activity may enhance sleep quality which in turn improves wellbeing.
