Muscle-strengthening Exercise Epidemiology: A new frontier in chronic disease prevention
Researchers have found that over 80 percent of adults do not report meeting the muscle-strengthening exercise guidelines (≥ 2 times/week) despite clinical and epidemiological evidence linking muscle-strengthening exercise to optimal health and well-being.
They also discovered that muscle-strengthening exercise has been generally overlooked in public health approaches for chronic disease prevention - compared to aerobic physical activity or exercise.
This article in Sports Medicine explores the challenges related to muscle-strengthening exercise promotion, provides ideas on how it can be done, and builds a case for a concurrent, coordinated and multiple-level strategies approach.
